On the 3rd, while the cold wind was blowing from the Sea of Japan, members of various circles living in the town visited all the houses and collected signatures from about 100 people. These are people centered around the Kaminokuni branch of the Japanese Communist Party.
A 74-year-old woman who responded to the signature says. “I live on a pension with my husband, and the consumption tax of 10% on daily shopping is heavy. I am worried about the future and I am trying to save money by not buying what I wear. Please realize the tax reduction to 5%.”
Due to the 10% consumption tax and the new Corona, the number of customers at restaurants and guest houses in the town has dropped sharply. The government’s support such as sustainability benefits is insufficient, and some stores such as snacks are closed.
The members argued, “The most effective way to support a poor life and revitalize the local economy is to reduce the consumption tax. Now is the time to send a voice calling for a tax reduction to politics.” Last year, I visited most of the 2000 households in the town and collected signatures from 1450 people against the consumption tax hike, so this time I set a goal of more.
Liberal Democratic supporters too
The townspeople are receiving urgent voices and signatures one after another. A woman in her 80s said, “We are saving money so as not to put a financial burden on our children, but while pensions are decreasing and the burden on national health insurance and long-term care insurance is increasing, we cannot withstand the consumption tax of 10%.” “The consumption tax of 10% on the living expenses of four family members is heavy. Welfare is only being cut, and the consumption tax is a big lie to finance welfare,” said a woman in her thirties who was indignant. Liberal Democratic Party supporters have also commented that it is a good way to reduce the consumption tax to 5% in order to loosen the purse string.
The various circles in the town are discussing with the Kaminokuni Town Council to petition the Kaminokuni Town Council to pass a written opinion requesting the government to reduce the consumption tax to 5%.

The Small and Medium Commerce and Industry Research Institute attached to Zenshoren recently announced the results of a sales trend survey in the second half of 2020 (September). It was pointed out that consumption did not recover even three months after the cancellation of the state of emergency by the new Corona (May 25), and both sales and profits were significantly worse than in the first half (March). The DI value (the number obtained by subtracting the “bad” ratio from the “good” ratio for the company’s response to business sentiment) is minus 68.5, which is a 27.1 point deterioration in the sales DI value from the previous quarter. The accommodation and restaurant business was particularly bad, with minus 93.3. The profit DI value was minus 70.6, a deterioration of 22.1 points from the previous quarter. The deterioration was for the third consecutive term.
Regarding the pass-through status of consumption tax, 22.8% of the accommodation / restaurant industry and 13.5% of the service industry answered that they could not pass it on at all. In the accommodation and restaurant industry, 66.7% could not pass on sufficiently.
Regarding the tax payment status, 28.9% of the food, textile, wood products, and printing-related manufacturing industries were in installments, and 2.6% were delinquent. In the accommodation and restaurant business, 13.3% was in arrears and 10.0% was in arrears.
Since the consumption tax reached 10%, the ratio of requests for discounts from business partners and customers was the highest in the construction industry, at 22.9%.
